Snapshot testing of food articles and the writers
I wanted to see if Adrian Millers opinion was correct, that the gatekeepers of publishing along with the writers were in fact white, middle class predominantly male. I wondered if the UK would be different to the US? So in one day (a Sunday) I went out and bought the newspapers and magazines that contained food articles. I also put in the mix some recent journals I had at home from stores.
This is what I found:
The Sunday Telegraph
The Sunday Times
The Mail on Sunday
Tesco in shop magazine
Prima
Good Housekeeping
Platinum
Red
Country Living
Good Food
It seems there is validity in Miller’s findings. I even looked at the editorial teams and found that it appears there is limited diversity in these gatekeepers.
If this is the case why is this so?
It would mean that the diverse cultures in the UK are not serviced or represented.
Are the different cultures even interested in reading these articles?
